A warm welcome to Angelfish Class from Ms Watson, Mrs Suleyman and Mrs Whalen.

Our curriculum

Leaving Reception behind and moving into year 1 can feel like a big step for both children and their parents. We make the transition as smooth as possible and the children will still be learning through play: exploring and discovering. However, over the course of the year, your child’s day will be a little more structured than it was in Reception and they may have to sit at a table for a little longer than they are used to but we still make sure that they move around while they are learning.

This will be your child's first year of the National Curriculum and there is a year 1 phonics screening check in June, which helps your child’s teacher identify if your child is secure in sounding out and blending graphemes. It also detects if they can read phonically decodable words. To find out more about the expectations for the year, please see our overview below:

P.E. days

Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please send your children to school wearing their PE clothes on these two days.

Upcoming events

We continue to try and be as open, supportive and welcoming to parents and carers as possible. As part of this ethos, we hold numerous events for parents and carers throughout the school year but you may wish to note these key dates:

Friday 10th January, 8:55am to 9:25am – Reception, year 1 and year 2 parents and carers are invited to come into your child’s class to read with your child.

Wednesday 22nd January, 9:00am to 9:40am  – History curriculum coffee morning. Come and find out how we teach history at Coombe Road.

Monday 27th January – Individual and class school photos.

Tuesday 28th January, 3:15pm to 4:00pm – Meet the teacher and celebrate learning curriculum evening.

Friday 7th February, 8:55am to 9:25am – Reception, year 1 and year 2 parents and carers are invited to come into your child’s class to read with your child.

Thursday 13th February – PTA event for children (TBD)

Phonics screening check

Phonics is an effective way of teaching children to read. By ensuring high quality phonics teaching, we want to improve literacy levels and give all children a solid base to build on as they progress through school. You can find out more about how we teach phonics by clicking here.

Children in year 1 complete a national phonics screening check in June. The purpose of the check is to confirm that all children have learned phonic decoding to an age appropriate standard.
