Parents and carers looking to start in september 2026

If you are looking for a school place in Reception for September 2026, please call our office manager, Lumina Friedl, on 01273 077130 or email admin@coomberoad.brighton-hove.sch.uk to arrange to come and meet us.

Starting school is an exciting time but can also be quite daunting, and we want to do as much as we can to make the transition to ‘big school’ as stress free as possible. To help with this, we have a timeline of events which we would love you to be part of.

Timeline of events

Wednesday 17^th June or Friday 19^th June – Where it is permitted, one of our reception teachers will visit our local nursery settings to meet your child and the team who currently work with them. This is a great way to get to know the children.

4pm on Monday 22^nd June – Please come to our welcome meeting at school. You will have the chance to meet me and some of the team, and we will explain what our ethos is, what the school day and year looks like and provide you with an overview of the curriculum. It will also be a good opportunity for you to meet other parents and carers, and ask us any questions.

1:45pm to 2:45pm on Tuesday 30^th June or Thursday 2^nd July – We will hold two play afternoons where you and your child will be invited into our reception classroom to have a ‘stay-and-play’ session. Your child can start to get used to the school environment and you can meet the rest of the teaching team. We will be in touch nearer the time to invite you to one of the sessions.

1:45pm to 2:45pm on Thursday 9^th July – We are very excited to invite you to our teddy bears’ picnic. You and your child will be invited to come into class (with or without your teddy bear) and stay with us to be involved in activities ranging from listening to stories, making sandwiches and fruit kebabs, doing arts and crafts, and playing with some of the resources which we have.

Thursday 3^rd September and Friday 4^th September – In the past, we have found that coming to meet parents or carers and their child at home has been really effective at building relationships between the school and families, and we would like to give you the opportunity to have a home visit on one of these days. We will be in touch nearer the time to discuss this possibility with you.

Starting at Coombe Road

We have a staggered start to the year to help the children settle in:

Friday 4^th September – Start date for any children who have any additional needs.

Monday 7^th September – Start date for our youngest children (those born in the summer).

Tuesday 8^th September – All other Reception children start.

Ongoing parental support

We hold numerous events for parents and carers throughout the school year but you may wish to note these ones planned for the autumn term:

2:30pm to 3:00pm on Wednesday 23^rd September – You are invited to a parent workshop to learn how we teach literacy at Coombe Road.

2:30pm to 3:00pm on Wednesday 30^th October – You are invited to a parent workshop to learn how we teach maths at Coombe Road.

We feel it is important that the children get an opportunity to meet the key adults in the school and fellow classmates, and for you to find out how things work at Coombe Road Primary School, so hopefully these events will help you and your family.
